Moffitts Farm lamb scoops a Fine Food award
By Julie Francis
Moffitts Farm Wiltipoll sheep meat has won a silver medal in the branded lamb category (small producer) at the 2015 Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards. The lamb racks scored 85 points out of 100. The judges comments were: “Very good product. Strong meat colour, great flavour, holds the juiciness and flavour well.”
The award demonstrates that the Comfortable Farming method for managing pastures, livestock and the environment on Moffitts Farm has multiple impacts outside the farm gate and in this case it means producing high eating quality meat. We anticipate this effect because of the even plane of nutrition provided by pasture and constant livestock shepherding which means animals are comfortable when moved or handled by humans.
This is an excellent result when we consider that Moffitts Farm is experiencing one of its driest 12 months on record, with the rainfall in the region being described as “severely deficient” by the Bureau of Meterology.
The wether lamb entered in the competition weighed 55kg as it left the farm, and was 10 months old. All Moffitts Farm Wiltipoll lambs are delivered by the owners direct to processor, Hardwicks in Kyneton.
